As you may know, at our WPEF community meeting on February 5th, 2009, WPEF challenged both School Board Candidates, Mike Stryer and Steve Zimmer, to sign our 8 point pledge (see attached). They both said they needed some time to think about it. Candidate Mike Stryer called, asked relevant questions, and then signed and faxed over the original pledge. Steve Zimmer has not signed the pledge.

Westchester High School Governance Council Update
In a January vote, Westchester High School stakeholders chose a new single council governance model to be implemented beginning with the 2009-2010 school year. This model, also known as "Proposal Two" will be composed of 17 voting members (1 school administrator, 1 UTLA representative, 1 counselor, 1 classified staff member, 5 certificated staff members, 4 parents-one per grade level, 2 community representatives, 2 students) and 2 non-voting members. Calling all Rotaries, Chamber of Commerce, Women s Club, Healthy Start, POWWOW, PTA, Elk, YMCA, WNA, Elected Officials, Neighborhood Council, LMU, Realtors and everyone else who supports our schools.
Bring your calendars, your budgets, your hopes and your dreams. The Public is welcome.
Together we can make a difference.

WPEF celebrates local scholars by attending WHS Academic Recognition Night
Academic Recognition Night will recognize the highest academic achievers at every grade level. 24 years of parents and community celebrating achievement at our H.S., This unique ceremony awards varsity letter jackets to high-achieving seniors supported by generous businesses, community groups, and individuals. It was amazing to see the vibrant personalites and hear about the aspirations of our seniors.

Teachers' Voices - Describe Our Dream Schools
What would our schools look like if there were no obstacles? No budgets, no policies, no one to say "No." Teachers from all levels of education chimed in about everything that we could want. Parents commented. Ron Mito moderated. This was NOT a discussion about Innovation, Autonomy, budgeting, etc. This was not a complaining session. This was a truly inspirational DREAMING BIG session. Back to School - Are We Ready? Discussed how each of our schools are doing and what we still need to make them even better. Topics included: WHS 4x4 and SLC's, Charter at OWMS and enrichment for Elementary Schools.

Public School Support Summit: All community entities that support our schools in one room, working together for common goals. PTA's, Healthy Start, POWWOW, Rotaries, Women's Club, YMCA, etc..... Combine budgets, dreams, calendars and more to make for one extremely effective support system!

Autonomy: The community had a chance to provide input in setting up “autonomy zones” within LAUSD, a new and innovative approach to provide greater influence and control over our family of schools. What does that mean? What does that look like for Westchester, Playa del Rey and Playa Vista. May 2007 Community Meeting
WPEF’s community meeting featured Dr. Shelley Fryer and a frank discussion of the community’s role in reform of our local high school. The meeting was especially timely given that WHS is this week receiving a final report from the high school accreditation body (WASC), which forces a school to evaluate itself, its past actions, and its future plans.
